Get Back on Mission
Take Action to Create the Church You Want
By: Ken Qualls
It breaks my heart to see churches with as few as two people attending Sunday after Sunday for years with no change of any kind. I have talked with many of these folks and they all have lamented the fact that their churches aren’t what they once were or what they would like them to be. Unfortunately many never were what they could have been or what they should have been. Many reasons are given for the church’s problem. Often the preacher is blamed. That’s why they get a new preacher every couple of years. It was some former member’s fault or a member who long ago stopped attending church. It’s the devil or it’s the worldly people who don’t want to know the truth. “The association doesn’t care about us they aren’t doing what they should.” “It’s them other churches that are enticing people away from our church by offering….” on and on the list goes.
Why is your church not what it should be? Make a list of why no one is visiting your church. Why no one is being saved. Why no one is coming to Bible study or worship or prayer services. Why isn’t the church ministering and reaching out. List every reason and excuse you can think of. Now go back and write your name at the top of the list. You are the only reason your church is the way it is. Nothing else on your list matters. Are you truly ready to take action to create the church you want, that God wants? Do you remember that old song It’s Me Oh Lord? That’s the answer. It’s me, it’s me, it’s me oh Lord standing in the need of prayer. Not the preacher, not the deacon, not someone else it’s me oh Lord. In the 1800s Gypsy Smith was a great evangelist. When asked how to have revival he said, “Go home, lock yourself in your room, draw a circle around yourself with chalk, and ask God to start a great revival within that circle! When God has answered your prayer the revival will be underway!” Do you want your church to change? Then pray that God will change you. That’s where it has to start. It’s imperative. If it doesn’t start there it won’t start. I’m not talking about just an emotional thrill. I’m talking about a catastrophic change that can only come from almighty God.
That’s the first step. Let me share a few other things your church must do.
-
Know who you are and what your mission is. If you don’t know this how can you tell anyone else? If you don’t know this how will you know if you are succeeding? Pray about it, discuss it and clearly define who you are and what your mission is.
-
Clean house. Throw out all of the excuses and reasons that have hindered you. Get rid of and absolutely prohibit all gossip, backbiting, slander, quarreling, jealousy, factions, angry outbursts, arrogance, whining, complaining and other such things that are destroying so many churches.
-
Get FAT: Faithful, Available, Trainable / Teachable. Regardless of how long we have been a Christian there is always something for us to learn. We must be ever learning, ever training and ever available.
Your church may never be a “big” church, but it should always be a growing church. It should be changing lives as God through his Holy Spirit ministers through you. It’s ok to be a small church, but you don’t have to be little. Don’t stagnate by always receiving and never giving like the Dead Sea.
